The 36th Annual Louisiana Sportsman Show was held March 17-20 at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. This year, the Louisiana State Advisory Council (SAC) once again hosted the Big Buck Contest at the largest outdoor show in the state.
The Big Buck Contest ended with 111 entries, mostly from Louisiana and Mississippi, with a few deer coming from other states as well. The contest included seven adult categories and one youth category. Custom-made plaques were awarded to the winners of each category. A QDMA Weatherby rifle and Leupold scope, donated by the South Louisiana Branch, was raffled to one of the seven adult winners. A $200 gift card to Bowie Outfitters, also donated by the South Louisiana Branch, was raffled among all youth entries. The largest Louisiana buck received an Orca cooler donated by Spillway Sportsman. The big prize of the event was a Yamaha Grizzly 350, donated by Yamaha Motors, which was raffled off among all adult contest entries.
Bill Marcello, of Thibodaux, was the lucky winner of the Yamaha ATV.
In addition to the Big Buck Contest, The Louisiana SAC also helped spread the word about QDMA and signed up new members at the QDMA booth, which was adjacent to the Big Buck Contest. Volunteers from the South Louisiana, Bayou, and Southwest Louisiana Branches helped work the booth for the four-day show. There were a total of 31 new QDMA memberships sold at the event, including six Rack Pack memberships. All new members were entered in a drawing for a Bear Crux Bow package, which was donated by the Southwest Louisiana Branch. The lucky winner of the bow package was Mikayla Hollier of Arnaudville. QDMA posters were also available for sale, which helped raise funds for the Lousiana SAC.
Overall, the event was a huge success. The SAC has already started working with show promoters to host the event again next year. They look forward to making the Big Buck Contest even bigger and better next year and are also planning to add some additional features to the show to further promote QDMA.
