F.A.Q. (Deer Management)

  • Why practice QDM?
  • Do I have to wait for a “wallhanger” or a “trophy” before I can kill a buck?
  • I hunted all season and did not see a buck that was legal under my club’s antler rules, and none of the bucks in my trail-camera pictures were legal either. Does this mean QDM is not working?
  • What’s the best buck-harvest rule? Is it antler points? Antler spread? Beam length? Age?
  • Should I harvest “management bucks” or “cull bucks”?
  • I captured trail-camera photos of mature bucks, proving that QDM is working, but I never see these deer while hunting. What’s wrong?
  • Is it possible to practice QDM without harvesting any female deer?
  • If I kill a doe, aren’t I also killing next year’s buck fawn?
  • How do I know how many does I should harvest?
  • I reached my doe-harvest goal last year, so can I skip doe harvest this year?
  • I just want to see the maximum number of deer when I am in the woods. Is this goal compatible with QDM?
  • I saw a lot fewer deer while hunting this season than I did in previous seasons. Does this mean I should stop harvesting does?
  • Someone in our camp killed a button buck. Should we punish this hunter to prevent this from happening again?
  • Is it okay for a kid or new hunter to kill a young buck in a QDM program?
  • Do I have to plant food plots to practice QDM?
  • Do I have to own land to practice QDM?
  • What’s the minimum acreage required to practice QDM?
