Dr. Mickey Hellickson Earns Al Brothers Professional Deer Manager Honors
Bogart, Ga. – Dr. Mickey Hellickson, Chief Wildlife Biologist for Texas’ famed King Ranch, has been named the Quality Deer Management Association’s 2006 Al Brothers Professional Deer Manager of the year. Hellickson was honored at the QDMA National Convention and Wildlife Expo, in Valley Forge, Pa.
Named for former Texas Wildlife Biologist Al Brothers, who is generally recognized as the father of Quality Deer Management, the award annually goes to a full-time wildlife and habitat manager for contributions to deer, deer hunting and deer management.
Hellickson, an Iowa native, earned an undergraduate degree in fisheries and wildlife biology from Iowa State University, a Master’s Degree in range and wildlife management from Texas A&M University, and a Doctorate from the University of Georgia.
Hellickson not only manages wildlife on the 825,000-acre King ranch, he also manages more than a million additional acres in South Texas and Iowa as a private consultant. He also was instrumental in establishing the South Texas Buck Capture Project in 1998, which comprises deer captures on five ranches annually. More than 3,100 deer have been captured, aged and evaluated, and released through the project.
He is a regular contributor to Quality Whitetails magazine, the QDMA journal, and to other national publications. He also actively participates in the Southeast Deer Study Group’s annual meeting.
“Mickey’s impact on white-tailed deer is not just confined to The King Ranch of even Texas,” QDMA Executive Director Brian Murphy said. “He is one of the most highly respected deer biologists in the country, and we are proud to recognize him with the 2006 Al Brothers Award.”
