QDMA Names Winand First recipient of the Signpost Award
BOGART, Ga. – To recognize the contributions of outdoor journalists who have done their professional best to
circulate accurate information on biologically sound deer management, QDMA has added a new award, Communicator of the Year. QDMA’s achievement awards are presented annually at the National Convention, and just recently at QDMA’s 9th Annual National Convention, C.J. Winand became the first recipient of the new award.
The Communicator of the Year award is known as “The Signpost” award, using the name given to the deer communication network that includes rubs and scrapes, and also the name of QDMA’s first official membership newsletter. QDMA works diligently to circulate accurate, reliable information to hunters, dispelling many myths and misunderstandings. Mr. Winand has been an ally in this endeavor, generously using his articles, books, websites and magazine pages to help promote QDMA as an organization.
The first recipient of the new Signpost award, a trained wildlife biologist, has been a friend and promoter of QDMA for years. In 1995 C.J. began writing the “Hunting Whitetails” column in Bowhunter magazine, and it has appeared in every issue since. He regularly uses the column to blend bowhunting strategy with biology and research news, thereby introducing scientifically sound information on QDM. His writing style is humorous, down-to-earth, and enjoyable to read, making it easy for every bowhunting enthusiast to connect with his columns.
“When we decided to add the Signpost Award, C.J. was an immediate and natural fit,” said Lindsay Thomas Jr., QDMA’s Director of Communications. “He was writing about QDM long before it was cool to do so, and he’s been an outspoken supporter of QDMA for many years. If you list the names of people and groups most responsible for advancing knowledge of QDM in North America, C.J. is near the top of the list.”
