QDMA surveyed state and provincial deer project leaders and asked them to provide 10 of the top naturally occurring forbs and shrubs that whitetails use in their regions. This gallery includes the top 10 for the Southeast. They are not necessarily the "10 most important" species. Some are highly preferred but unlikely to be found in areas with high deer density. Others may only be eaten in areas of high deer density when more preferred species are unavailable. However, they are the 10 species deer managers in the Southeast should be able to identify and monitor when tracking herd health in relationship to habitat quality.
