Hello to all,I've just joined up and I've already found a ton of great info on this site! I must admit that I'm a waterfowler at heart and until last fall I was a "if its brown its down" sort of deer hunter.It was all about the table for me. That changed last year when I actually put some time in scouting and located a couple of good bucks to try for.I saw three really nice bucks and I managed to tag one of them. That was so much better then just shooting any old(young) deer that happened along and now I've decided to really try to help out the deer on my properties and to hold out for a big one or nothing! A doe or two will fill the freezer and if I shoot a buck he will have to be a good one! Here's a pic of my buck from last fall!

I know what you mean about changing your philosophy when it comes to deer hunting. It takes some getting used to for sure, but I'm happy to say I watched a nice young 8-pointer pass by my deer stand during the rifle hunt up north. He'll be bigger in a few years, and the doe I shot the next day filled the freezer just the same.
I did get him in the controlled hunt.He was rut crazy chasing a doe all over the place before I shot him! It was very cool to watch in person instead of on tv.
Welcome aboard goose smasher. I can honestly say sometimes you shake your head when you pass a young buck but what you hold in your hand is the exact reason why we do it.
Its not big antlers but mature balanced herds as well as mature, smart whitetails.
