A hunter here in Maine just set a new state record for turkey 26 lbs. I got to wondering what the records are for other states. Let's see who's got the biggest.

That one had to be tripping all over that beard.

I tried to look up the record for Missouri, but didn't have any luck. I do know that this year they moved the season forward a week and the turkeys seemed to have more weight to them this year, that and the 2005 hatch was poor, so a bigger proportion of older birds were most likely killed. Seemed to range from word of mouth from 22#-26# with a sprinkling of some larger and smaller. 20-24# turkeys are pretty common from my past experiences here in Mo.

My personal biggest is a 25# with a double beard, one 13" and the other 11 3/4". Beards were corkscrew shaped. Had some pretty good hooks, but can't remember exactly what they were, but were between 1.25-1.5".

I personaly know of two 28# birds that have been killed in MO. I seem to recall that the NWTF kept some type of record book. My best was a mere 24#.

There are a handful of 30 pounders shot in Indiana each year, but I don't know of any record book.
