Wow... I am impressed with my "new" JD 71 flex planter. I planted 14 rows of sweet corn with a 24 cell plate and it planted great. I like a 16 cell plate better so that I can go slower so I'll plant the rest when my new plates get here. We will be putting out 3 acres of sweet corn and 3 acres of Wapsie Valley dent corn for the deer and I'm itching to get on the tractor. I planted my sunflowers and beans with the planter and I love it. Simple and easy to change the plates and planted like a champ. Now the "hunt" is on for more planters to add onto the tool bar. I would recommend this planter for a beginner or seasoned veteran.

Yep,

A JD71 is on my short list. What does a JD71 weigh empty?

Hoyt63 I have seen your planting rig, do you think you could run a two row unit off a very large ATV with a locked out suspension?

Thanks!

I just tossed the shipping receipt yesterday. It was either 680 or 860. LOL. I can't remember which.

Thanks Fishorhunt,

How many row planter is your unit? I would think a single row planter would be under 300 Lbs and probably less than 200 Lbs.

Thanks.

The actuator can lift 2 yes..But that would be a lot of wear and tear on the atv. I use a lock out on a 1 row and have heavy springs on my atv.Personally i wouldnt run 2 with an atv unless you build a frame with wheels for the planter. I have a 750 King Quad.

Hoyt63,

I'm getting a little agressive and I agree 2 on an ATV would be to much. I'm planting 6 acres in a centralized plot so it probably doesn't matter.

Thanks.

Fishorhunt, the manual for my 70 Flexis, the forefather to the 71, lists a unit weight of about 120# with the metal seed hopper. Many of the parts are interchangeable between the 2 models, I'd think the weights are very similar. I thought the recommended planting speed was the same when using a 16 cell or 24 cell plate. The difference between the 16 or 24 cell count, in conjunction with different gearing, is in row plant spacing or population. Mark
