Tent caterpillars, "army worms".

You don't need to spray for a small infestation - in morning or evening when all the caterpillars are in their 'tents' you can just remove the tent and squish them.

They will eat foliage, but a small infestation is fairly harmless.

Thanks. I think I remember my Gramps burning them out of the tree.

I just removed a small tent catapillar infestation earlier this week from one of my apple trees. If I see more of my trees getting the tents, I will have to spray them.

I was spraying my orchard yesterday at 1/2" green, and saw 3 small nests. The trees were completely covered with spray, so i knew they would die, but i stopped the tractor and got down and hand mashed them anyway...just to make sure.

What is the spray of choice at this time of year for tent caterpillars and jap beetles?

Imidan and Malathion kills tent caterpillars, I do not have jap beetles.
